New York City ‘major building’ code changes aim to reduce construction fatalities
Changes to the definition of a “major building” in the New York City building code this December that will require every project seven storeys or taller to have an approved site safety plan (SSP) and safety co-ordinator will impact thousands of buildings. The current edition of the code only requires a SSP and safety co-ordinator for buildings 10 storeys or more.

New York-based Triumph Construction Corp. received a $132-million contract award for the first phase of a $2.3-billion flood-risk reduction project in Staten Island. Triumph will construct large interior drainage ponds and associated stormwater infrastructure for the South Shore of Staten Island project in South Beach, Staten Island.
Kolluri steps down as head of agency overseeing $16B rail tunnel project
Gateway Development Commission (GDC) CEO Kris Kolluri is stepping down from his role leading the bistate agency overseeing the $16 billion Hudson Tunnel Project. The news was first reported by Colleen Wilson of NorthJersey.com and confirmed by NJBIZ. Kolluri submitted his resignation in a July 18 letter to the GDC commissioners, with his last day set for Aug. 16.
Big deal to bring Ikea to empty Midtown lot raises bigger questions
It’s major news that Sweden’s Ingka Investments, which owns most Ikea stores, formed a “strategic alliance” in Extell’s planned, one million square-foot mixed-use tower at 570 Fifth Ave. Developer Gary Barnett has long planned to build a large new skyscraper at the precious Midtown site.
